Large Blue Penguin
He takes care of the baby penguins, making sure their bellies are always full of fresh fish.
Until now, all my animal jars were wide and short. I wanted to make a jar that was both tall and wide, allowing it to hold even more knick knacks than ever before.
When throwing this jar, I paid attention to making a section near the top that was perpendicular to base that could become the lid’s flange. I wanted the jar to have a wider base and collar into a smaller top for the lid. Overall, getting the lid and body to fit properly wasn’t too difficult during the trimming phase thanks to the care taken during the throwing process.
Although I try to make unique animal designs, I loved the baby blue penguin so much that I decided to make a fully grown blue penguin using the same underglazes and features.
The key difference is that I used porcelain instead of bmix clay so the un-painted belly has great contrast with the blue paint after glaze firing.
