Frog

Hopping from lily pad to lily pad, the frog looks for someplace to rest.

When choosing what animal to make next, I’m definitely biased towards birds and mammals. However, I wanted to try making an amphibian. The frog also has these pretty shades of green which are uncommon in other animals.

I really struggled with this design. Originally, I sculpted a very wide mouth that stuck out from the head and webbed hind legs. Sadly, the face looked more creepy and less cute. I opted for an extremely cartoonish version of the frog’s face and more realistic webbed feet at the front only. Also, the hind legs were awkward to attach because I couldn’t get the bend on the leg to look natural. With more time and patience, I might’ve gotten it right. But by the end, both of those things have run dry.

If I were to try sculpting a frog again, I’d attempt to create the realistic mouth again but make it smaller. I’d probably need to draw it out more to really flesh out the idea before using clay.

Some animals come really naturally to me and others are truly frustrating. I hope to learn something from each design, improve upon them and repeat the ones I especially like on different forms.
