Baby Elephant

A baby elephant with ears as big as can be and a hankering for roasted peanuts.

Elephant side

Sculpting this elephant jar came really naturally for me and was quite fun! The ears needed to be symmetrical and not touch the base for risk of getting glaze fused. The same goes for the trunk so I paid attention to how far they were positioned from the body.

I used my favourite underglaze here, the Amaco morning fog (fired at cone 05). It’s a beautiful baby blue that is perfect for a cute baby elephant. For the accent colour in the ears and belly, I brightened up some peach underglaze with white. And finally I put a dab of dark blue inside the trunk and along the horizontal lines going upwards as well as the tail’s tip.

Notice how dangerously close the ears are to touching the base of the jar. I also applied wax at these potential contact points to ensure no glaze is there to cause a fusing of pieces.

Elephant back

It was such a blast making this elephant jar. It’s definitely one of those pieces that look complex but was easy to make. Probably thanks to all the lessons learned from my previous jars. Having an experience like this every once in a while really motivates me to try new animals.
